I bought a pleco years ago to suck up the algae in my smaller turtle tank.
That fish did an AMAZING job. Overnight, string, fluffy, and even the grey algae got 100% gobbled.
Unfortunately, before he had a chance to grow, one of the turtles ate him.
So, I tried again with a smaller, faster fish, an otto, and it died within a week... after research, I discovered those don't last long... and he hardly cleaned at all! (Or at least not in the volume I needed!)
So 2 years a ago, I bought another pleco, the biggest one this time, and he's doing so good! He cleans up great, and he even tries to 'assist' in sucking up the turtle's shells! :P
I've seen all kinds of bad reviews about how these get enormous... well guess, what, it says, up to 11''!
Such a big fish works great for me, and it keeps the fish safer too.

Cute Little Pleco? Just Wait!
Pleco's are the coolest looking and one of the most durable fish you can buy. They will also voraciously clean every square millimeter of your tank, tirelessly and efficiently.
I love their almost primordial appearance and the fact that they have real eyelids, which they blink underwater.
It's these great characteristics that make them an apparent "obvious" choice for beginners. However, Plecos are not limited by the size of their environment at all, and they can get enormous! How big? Let's just say that within a year, they can get over 12-14 inches long where they will not be able to turn around in a moderate-sized tank. And at that size, you will have a difficult time giving them away...
If you're set on getting a Pleco, I would make sure you have at least a 100 gallon tank, which becomes a major investment.
I was lucky with mine, and was able to find a home for him in the large aquarium at our local Chinese Restaurant. And no, he didn't end up on a plate!

I love the pleco it wanders around my tank some time I see it sucking on my algae wafers the reason I rated it 4 stars is because it sucks on the back a lot and it hardly comes out.
