MARINELAND® Penguin 150B Power Filter
A pretty good filter choice for those who don't want to dish out a ton of money.
When I first started it up, it had a very loud grinding, whirring sound. I had to fill it to the very, very top with tank water, but the noise did stop.
For those with covered aquariums, as long as you're able to keep your water level fairly high, it's a very quiet filter.
The biowheel does stop VERY easily -- mostly due to the water flow or the plastic cover blocking its way.

I bought this for my 26 gallon tank. Right out of the box this thing was very very noisy. The impeller makes a LOT of noise. I made double sure that there was nothing in the impeller, water level was right and I primed it correctly yet it was still really noisy. I could hear it in the other room. I even had it cut off on me once randomly.
Can hold two filter cartridges making for better cleaning
Extendable intake tube
Made of cheap plastic that breaks or cracks easily
biowheel easily stops spinning.
randomly stops pumping water

Quality with this product is inconsistant
I'm currently very frustrated with my Penguin BIO-Wheel filter. I purchased a new 25 gallon tank about a month and a half ago and the Bio-Wheel 150 was included with the tank. Initially I was extremely impressed with this filter--the noise level was almost entirely silent, the option for two filter cartridges is very helpful for my goldfish, and the Bio-Wheel itself is great to have. Unfortunately, within 2 weeks of installing the filter it became quite noisy and began to sputter intermittently. I've tried everything I can think of--my water level is as high as it can be and has stayed that way since I first filled my tank. I thought maybe the aquarium sand in my tank had clogged the motor somehow, so I disassembled the machine very gently, rinsed everything off and re-installed it with no luck re-gaining my quiet filter. Today the filter is not even functioning at all. I don't know if I dislodged something important when I was cleaning it, or if my specific filter happens to be faulty, or what. But I'm so sad that something which ought to have lasted me years with the proper treatment has become dysfunctional after such a painfully short amount of time. Now I have to decide whether to trust this company and product again and hope I actually receive the quality that I'm paying for.

Very noisy filters
I purchased the Penguin 350 and 200 filters for my 60 gallon aquarium. Both of these filters are ridiculously loud, at night I can hear them from my bedroom, which is very annoying. I have replaced the impellers on both of the filters to see if that would solve the problem, but it did not. These are expensive filters and they are not worth the money, the much cheaper Top Fin filters that I have on my other aquarium are much much quieter. Also, the filters are not very compatible with the Marineand aquarium that I bought. The filter housing covering the Bio Wheels is jammed up against the light housing which has to be resolved by lifting the light housing off of its mount just to turn it off or on.
