Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fluval, Still The One My Fluval 203 finally stopped pumping after 10 years of quiet consistent operation. These days, its great to compare the available canister filters on line. The 'Hang-On-Tank' Magnum and Eheim look very well engineered. There were some negative reviews on the Fluval 5 series but I just couldn't resist going with Hagen, I've used their products since the 70's. The Fluval 205 is a Great unit ! Set-up was easy enough, I like how the internals fit together. Tubing, connections, shut of valve are very well done. The priming feature worked instantly, a great improvement over the old 203. Oh, and this unit is dead silent. There are things about this type of filter that one should understand before you buy: 1- It needs a positive suction head i/e you will not be able to stand it on the same table you have your tank on. Fluval says 7" min from water level to top of pump. My experience is that you will pump more quieter GPH with at least 3' of head pressure. 2- The main advantage of a canister is that you can set up the media type and arrangement that suits the tank you have the filter on. Want to filter through Peat, or have had great results using old gym socks, go for it. 3- There are better 'filters' available, with engineered permeability that stops exactly a given size particle. The canister uses older style mesh to trap particles but its real strength is that its a bacteria condominium that you control. It has way more surface area for your bacteria colony to flourish. And by more I mean 'order of magnitude' greater than pleated filters. Thats 1 x 10 to the 3rd more, Gega instead of Mega. I'm sure there are other great products out there but Hagen's Fluval was a solid choice for me. regards, JMatt "-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product I baught the 305 a week ago. It is very easy to set up and use. It is extremely quiet as well, I hear the lights more than the filter. Only Con is the price but it is worth it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low maintenance Once it is set up and installed you rarely have to do anything to it. The multiple media baskets make aquarium keeping all the less stressful. Especially when you combine one of these systems with a power filter. If you can use LEGOs you are more than capable of assembling and disassembling this filter for maintenance. The most difficult part is removing the top.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filtration.. I purchased this from Petsmart only because they gave me a good enough discount on other things in the same purchase. They have this filter overpriced by about $30 compared to competitors. The filtration system is awesome. I have it hooked up to a 45 Gallon tank which it cycles 4.6 times per hour. I even checked the flowrate with an inline meter and it was actually just above the advertised rate of 206GPH. (210 GPH is what I got) The bad reviews on this Filtration system are kind of deceiving. The owners manual and website will state that there are certain parts that must be replaced annually. On of the complaints is that it was leaking from between the head and the container after 3 years. This is common on all canister filters that haven't had their seals replaced annually. Infact any seals should be replaced on any canister on an annual basis. Also the manual also says to replace the Ceramic shaft and magnetic impeller annually, as well as the Impeller cover. This can be ordered direct from Fluval as a kit for $25-32 depending on what model you have. I found this Model that I bought (the 206) to not only be efficient but easy to clean. To remove the filter simply unplug, close the hose valve. Disconnect the valve using the red tab on top of the system, then remove the canister. Clean the canister, replace the desired media, empty the lines into a small bucket, put it back together. Starting this filter is very easy. Turn the valve to full flow, plug it in, and plunge the plunger a few times and voilla. It is extremely quiet. You have to get right up next to it to hear the hum it puts off. The return submerges below the water level so you dont have to hear the water if you don't want to. My only complaint, and its not all that serious is that it comes with "1" long tube for both the return and draw sides that must be cut to size. This is fine But I would prefer that it have "2" of that same tube. Not a biggy they are only $18 for another. I highly recommend this filter, and the like. Not just for beginners but for experienced aquarist. "Tanks" for reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, mostly great instructions I purchased this filter on Black Friday 2012. It was my first ever canister filter after running HOB filters for the previous year. Since then, I've bought another 306 and a 206 as well. I absolutely love these canister filters. The instructions made it very simple for me to set up. The only part I missed was at the end before priming the filter. There is a red plastic piece on the aquastop valve along with a gray plastic piece. The red plastic piece snaps into place easily, but the gray plastic piece was very resistant to moving, to the point where I did not think I needed to do anything with it. The instructions did not say anything specifically about moving it. I struggled with getting the filter started for half an hour before I threw caution to the wind and tried to bend the gray piece down. After a bit more pressure than I would have normally given, it moved down into place. This is very important - I believe this is the flow control for the filter. If it is not down, the water will not flow between the filter and the tank. Other than this issue, I have had no problems with the filter, and once I knew about the lever it was no problem setting up the second filter. The whole package is very comprehensive overall and does its job extremely well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't really be any simpler I have used and are currently using different types of canister filters. This is by far one of the best brands I've used. The tubes are flexible enough that you don't have to fight with them to sit where you want/need them to sit. The water cut off valves for the tubes make for easier cleaning, same applies to the drain pipe at the bottom of the filter. I customize all of my filters based on what fish or other water animal, size of tank, type of water, etc, and this allows for that customization with ease. To give you an idea of how good this "fish" filter is: I have one on a very large turtle tank that houses a very destructive 20+lb alligator snapping turtle...to this day I have crystal clear water and haven't had any problems. It's ease of use is also great. You don't have to primer this as it primers itself when you plug it in. For the most part, it takes out most of the work that traditional canisters can make you do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First canister filter I am relatively new to freshwater aquariums. After having a smaller tank for a year, I upgraded to a 46 gallon tank. I bought the Fluval 306 canister to use with this tank. The filter is rated for larger tanks, but the sale price was too good to pass up. Setup of the filter was relatively easy, once you get over the nervousness of cutting the tubing incorrectly. The instructions were okay, but could have provided some more information for the more novice user (such as height of intake/outtake, spacing between the intake/outtake). The filter has been running for about 1 month now. I've stopped, opened, and changed some of the media during that time. It is easy to shutoff the water and disconnect the filter. I have not had any leaks or spilled water while connecting or disconnecting the filter. It can be a bit challenging to get the top off the filter to access the media, but I would rather deal with that than a top that was prone to leaking. I had a new, large piece of driftwood in the tank. This discolored the water for some time. After about 2 weeks, I changed the Fluval charcoal to Seachem Purigen because I was not happy with the clarity of the water and was starting to question the effectiveness of this filter. After putting in Purigen (known to help remove wood tannins) the water was crystal clear in about 2 days. I am now happy with my water clarity and the water flow produced by this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome filter! I love this size filter for my turtles. I had an older Fluval that worked like a champ for 5+ years. I was able to upgrade on this filter because of the low price and discount. Thanks Petsmart!
