We bought these clippers in 2005 when our Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was about 6 months old. They have never failed and after 10 years continue perform as well when they were new. Wheatens have a very fine, non-shedding coat that requires powerful clippers, especially for lazy owners like me who do not brush and groom as regularly as we should. The only "maintenance" I've performed on these clippers has been to clean out the hair now and then, and occasionally oil the moving parts.
We previously never owned a dog that needs the level of grooming a Wheaten requires, so we had to learn as we went. For those who are also are just starting out, here are a few things we figured out along the way:
- These clippers came with a No. 10 Andis UltraEdge blade. When we bought them, we also bought a set of Andis plastic comb attachments, thinking these could be used with the No. 10 blade. We were wrong. They fit on the blade but they just don't work. We talked to a couple of professional groomers, who confirmed that these are excellent clippers, and both advised that a No. 0 blade works best with the comb attachments. This size blade is not a standard stock item at PetSmart stores and requires special order. We never bought one, but the same recommendation from two experienced groomers probably makes it a safe bet.
- All of the store employees and groomers we talked to told us to use the cool spray lube, and it was good advice. I have bought Andis CoolCare Plus and Oster KoolLube, which both are sold in a Lysol-sized can with blue label and seem exactly the same. Spray this on your blade frequently during grooming to keep it running smooth and cool, which protects blade and reduces chance of burning your dog's skin with a hot blade.
- We bought another brand 4F blade to use with this clipper after being told that brand and Andis blades are both compatible. The non-Andis blade appears to be constructed of equally high quality, and it did work with these clippers, but it did not perform well in my experience. I later bought an Andis 4F CeramicEdge blade which has been excellent. (For Wheatens, this is the recommended blade for grooming body and sides.) So, based on my limited experience, I recommend you buy Andis blades for Andis clippers.
- I'm starting to see very slight signs of rust on our blades after 10+ years of use, which I blame on my failure to clean and oil after use. This has not affected performance yet, but I expect it will. If you maintain them as Andis recommends, I think Andis clippers and blades could be a lifetime investment for pet owners with occasional use.

I bought these after fairly extensive research on line and asking others who clipped their horses what they had and loved. I used them to clip my horse and never had a problem. I have many extra blades and coolant because the blades will heat up fast but as far as I've learned, they all do that. I just clipped my poodle puppy and the quiet motor doesn't put him off at all. They are great to handle. The only thing I could wish for is a cordless one with this much power. Maybe some time in the future they'll make one.
One note is if you aren't giving 5 stars, please tell what was wrong with the item.
