Top Paw® Extra Tall Pet Gate

Top Paw® Extra Tall Pet Gate is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 100.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Gate I work for a greyhound rescue and this is the gate we recommend all of our adopters to buy. It opens easily and attaches to the door frame easily. It's made of metal so it's pretty sturdy. For the reviewer saying the cat door is too big, and it's big enough for a German Shepard and 5 year old child to fit through--- they are either lying or they have a fluke that was made incorrectly. I have two cats, one 13 pound and one 17 pound. They both fit through perfectly with not much room to spare. The "people door" is a bit narrow. For the lady who said she can't get a laundry basket through it...neither can I...so I just lift the basket OVER the gate...it's not that tall. It's an excellent gate and I highly recommend it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but not good with cats. I got this gate to keep my new dog and cats apart while I'm training the dog to properly interact with the cats. The gate was easy to put together but the screws that came with it to install the mounts are really low quality. One of them broke apart while being screwed into the pilot holes I made. I had to dig it out of the wall and patch it. Another started to strip as it was being screwed in. I had to go and buy stronger screws that were better made to install the gate. Another issue I had was that the bars aren't close enough together to keep my cats away from the dog. While the gate has worked out well with my dog, one of my cats is part velociraptor and has been testing the gate since it was put up. He tried to jump over the top and body slammed into it making it fall to the ground when I was just using it without the mounts. He was unharmed as he wandered over it acting like nothing had happened. When I wasn't able to install the mounts due to the screws falling apart he rammed into the bottom making the bottom come loose and swing up so he was yet again able to get through to the other side. Once I had the mounts installed he figured out that he could fit through the bar between the end of the door and the bar next to it. I've had to tape cardboard over parts of it to keep my cats from getting through the bars. Something needs to be redesigned to keep cats from being able to fit through and better hardware needs to be provided to mount the gate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gate!! I am not sure what people expect.. We own three gates. One regular (on the stairs), and two extra tall. One is placed fairly close to the middle of the stairway, with a heavy wool blanket in front of it. We live in a cabin with window A/C units and the blanket keeps the cool air down in the summer, warm air down in the winter. We also have a blanket across the kitchen door to the back mud room during the winter. Very cold. If I can fit through two "human" gates with blankets draped in front of them, while holding a laundry basket over the gates, then anyone can!! For those that complain about not fitting through the "human" gate.. try carrying the bucket from the upstairs dehumidifier down twice a day to empty it! Yet, no problems, even then! We have two med/large dogs.. they have jumped on them.. and they have not destroyed them ever! They are not unstable if you use them correctly. They will be unstable if you are trying to span an area that is too wide for them. Yes, we are getting ready to purchase a fourth to place in the basement door, so it can dry out after a lot of rain, while keeping wildlife from coming in. We use our gates for when we leave the dogs alone. We don't want them at the top of the stairs where it is hot during the summer. We don't want them in the mud room, because it not temp regulated. It also gives us a chance to change out of outdoor clothing, etc. since our dogs have serious allergies. We don't want them in the room off of the dog run, it is not temp regulated either. Otherwise, the gates are open, while we are home. We have had them up since 2007. We are so used to them that we can navigate them in complete darkness. We were surprised by such negative comments regarding this gate! The cat door is not too big. I am not sure what people are doing to them that the latch falls apart! We had five cats when we first started out with the gates, with zero problems! Unfortunately, the last of them died of old age not too long ago. If your gate is unstable, you have not properly installed it. When installed correctly you cannot pull or push it out of place. Ours do not budge. We both are firefighters, and we both put a beating on the gates to ensure our dogs safety. The gates passed with flying colors. Let's not forget, the gate is not a substitute teacher for your pet.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from walk through gate you cant walk through This gate is simple to install with the pressure mount. The only problem is to get enough pressure between the plates and the wall there is an interference with the operation of the walk through function of the gate. You can loosen the pressure plates and the gate will open and close but due to the lack of pressure the gate itself is not solid secure and steady. Would be great for a small dog, but if you have a small dog you probably don"t need a 41' gate. As a solid gate it will keep the dogs out of my basement, unfortunately people cannot go through the gate without taking it down. It can be used a a solid gate which makes it inconvenient and not worth the selling price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better than nothing, but some issues I had a similar gate years ago and liked it very much. Unfortunately, I gave it away and now I need one again, so had to purchase another (for about twice as much as the first one I bought). I don't remember the brand name of the other gate I had, but I wish I could find it. Oh well, on to this one. First, though marketed under the brand name "Top Paw," this gate is apparently manufactured by Carlson (according to included documentation), so I'm guessing it's essentially the same gate. Don't spend a lot of time (like I did) agonizing over the two of them. I wanted one that I could purchase and take home, so I got mine at PetSmart. The door is, as advertised, 41 inches tall. Important if you have jumpers. Most dogs can probably not get over it, and since you're purchasing a gate with a small pet walk through door, you're probably not using it to keep cats out of an area. (My cats can jump 41" gates.) In my case, I'm using it to keep my dog out of the litter pan area. I won't go into more detail than that, but if you have cats and dogs, you know what I'm talking about. The other dimensions are a little different. The docs give the dimensions of the small door as 9 x 7. It's actually 6 3/4" wide and 10 1/4" tall. Might be important if you're trying to keep smaller dogs out as well, as it won't keep them all out. The walk through gate is 16" wide, which I find a little tight. I have two other gates (baby gates, no inset pet door) that have a 19" walk through that is a lot more comfortable to pass through, especially if you're carrying a laundry basket, for example. The walk through door only opens one way. This is a little inconvenient, as all my other gates have swung both directions and that's what I'm used to. Also, the walk through advertises a "one touch" design. That gives the impression you can easily get through using one hand. Not really, and if you have arthritis in your hands, forget it. You have to pull back the spring loaded lock (the red piece in the picture) and lift up on the latch at the same time. I usually end up using two hands. If I'm going to be going in and out frequently, I just close the latch, but not enough to engage the lock. The size of the doorway I'm using it in is 29", so it's the perfect size without the added extensions. Therefor, I can't comment on using it with the extensions. I can corroborate comments others have made about it not being sturdy. I'm currently using it without the stabilizing cups and it's not at all sturdy. (Doesn't really matter for my dog, as she's used to the other gates being more stable and she hasn't really tried to get past it.) I decided to add the cups, until I found the only way you can add them with this gate is by screwing them into the door frame. All the other gates I've used have provided sticky pads as an alternative for attaching the cups. They may not be as effective, but if you truly don't want to drill four holes in your doorway, it's a better alternative than using the gate without them. The other gates I use them with are still standing and they have never come down (but I don't have BIG dogs jumping on them). All in all, this gate works for my purpose, but I can see where it would be troublesome for others. Larger dogs would have no trouble knocking this gate down without the stabilizing cups drilled into the door frame. Even with that, I can see that large dogs could damage the gate to get through it if they really wanted to, as someone has already posted. I do plan to try to use some two sided sticky stuff, maybe Command strips, to see if I can cut out the movement within the doorway. Also, I wish there was a way to take the small door off completely without damaging the gate, because I've had my cats on one side and the door had closed and they weren't sure how to get back through it. It would be a nice feature.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works exactly as advertised I've read a few negative reviews on here about this gate, and they all have not followed the instructions. I used the retainer discs and the gate is solid. I have a 110 pound Newfoundland who likes to lay against this gate. When she lays down, she falls against the gate and slides herself to the floor and the gate has never come loose. I also have two boxers (85 and 65 pounds) who constantly slam themselves against this gate trying to get at the cat on the other side. Again, the gate has never come loose. People, don't write a bad review if you haven't followed the instructions. You're not doing anyone a service in doing so. If I had to fault this gate for anything, it would be for the latch. It is made from plastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT.. I've had this gate for years now and I'm very pleased with it. I use it to keep my two cats out of a particular room. It works with a spring action so you can adjust it to fit the width of your door. (I only use it where the door is) Can take it off...and put in back easily between the door easily. But you don't need to take gate off as the gate has a open and close mechanism that allows you to walk in and out of the room by opening it..and closing it (gate) back. Very sturdy quality materials. It was an excellent investment for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Felt flimsy, no matter what I did I have two puppies I need to separate while they get acquainted with each other. One is 7 pounds and has reached his full size. The other is already 20 pounds and expected to get much bigger. I was looking for a tall gate that would continue to be useful as my second pup grew. I tried several configurations and reread the instructions multiple times, but I was not able to get the gate to feel sturdy. I tried it in two different doorways, with and without the protective cups, and with each of the different extensions. No matter how much I tightened it, the gate wobbled when I pushed on it. When it was tight enough for the screws not to slide, it distorted the pass-thru gate so it didn't sit straight at the bottom. When the bottom screws were tight enough to hold the gate in place, the latch wouldn't open. Poor design, very disappointing.

I need a couple of these gates, but adjustable between about 33 and 44 inches. The picture on here shows one that is definitely wider than 29 inches. Why is this the only size offered?
